Summary – Following a season in which their paths did not cross, Forfar Athletic and near neighbours Montrose meet in what will be the first of a minimum five derbies this term in an eagerly anticipated Betfred Cup tie at Station Park on Wednesday evening. The home side will go into the game with a similar squad as was available at Methil on Sunday past when they secured a penalty shoot-out bonus point after a 1-1 draw over the ninety minutes against East Fife. The overall display on Sunday when the ‘Loons’ were backed by a three-figure travelling support did not hit the heights of the first half showing at Falkirk but nevertheless like their visitors the home side will go into the contest with still a chance of qualification for the next stage of the tournament.
The ‘Gable Endies’, unlike their opponents, will be playing their final group fixture, the Ladbrokes League 2 Champions having recorded excellent victories over Falkirk and East Fife before going down to a solitary goal to St. Johnstone on Saturday past. Former Station Park player and coach Stewart Petrie has to date only added Josh Skelly and Patrick Cregg to his squad in the summer, but no doubt the Station Park faithful will give a warm welcome back to Martyn Fotheringham and the Campbell brothers Iain and Ross, the latter now occupying a Player-Assistant Manager role at Links Park.
Both sets of officials are hoping for a reasonable turn out of fans despite the midweek date, with admission prices reduced from the normal league entrance levies.
