Forfar Athletic v Greenock Morton – match preview
[Thursday, 04 July 2019 10:49]
The ‘Loons’ welcome Morton to Station Park on Saturday first for the second of three pre-season fixtures, prior to the return to competitive action on the 13th when near neighbours Brechin City are the visitors in the first of the Betfred Cup sectional ties.
It is the second season running that the Cappielow outfit have visited Forfar for a pre-season joust, the sides having played out an entertaining if goalless draw in the Station Park sunshine last July.
Looking back to last Saturday’s opener against the ‘Pars’ there was plenty on show to please Jim Weir and his management team, not to mention the larger than normal home support for a fixture of that nature, another encouraging feature.
The fitness despite only five sessions prior to the game looked good, while much of the football on show was to say the least pleasing to the eye. Quite a few if not all of the new faces on show also made their mark over the ninety minutes.
Now with another two nights hard graft behind them at their St. Andrews summer training base, Jim will be looking no doubt for another step up in tempo this coming weekend and for the visit of Cove Rangers on Tuesday evening of next week.
Quite a few of the players who began life on the bench last Saturday are likely to get a starting berth this time around as squad evaluation at this early stage continues.
Morton are now under the management of local legend David Hopkin who guided Livingston to promotion to the Premiership in season 2017-18, prior to what would appear to have been an ill-fated spell at the helm at Bradford City.
He has brought in seven new players to date to augment the Cappielow squad including Robbie Muirhead from Dunfermline and Nicky Cadden from Livingston, as well as a couple from English non-league ranks.
After last week’s earlier kick-off time, we revert this Saturday to the normal 3 p.m. start to proceedings.
