PREVIEW
Cinch League2 leaders Kelty Hearts are the scheduled visitors to Station Park on Saturday.
However as heavy snow blankets the town and large swathes of the country it would appear as this article is penned on Friday morning, it would seem likely that many sporting fixtures scheduled for the weekend could be in some doubt
Fingers crossed however that the highly anticipated clash between the current top two teams in the division will go ahead.
The league newcomers have certainly made an impact on the Scottish football scene since gaining promotion to the SPFL in May of last year. They currently sit nine points clear of the ‘Loons’ at the top of the table with two games in hand and in the Scottish Cup they defeated League One Montrose, before knocking out cup holders St. Johnstone prior to losing out to St. Mirren in Paisley last Saturday.
The ‘Loons’ however will certainly not go into the contest with an inferiority complex. Back in ‘sunny’ August the home side had the upper hand for lengthy periods of the game at Station Park in the first ever competitive encounter between the sides, twice taking the lead through Matty Aitken and Craig Thomson, a Nathan Austin double however seeing the points shared.
Then at Kelty in November, a goal from half-time substitute Alfredo Agyeman for Kevin Thomson’s outfit just two minutes into the second period was all that separated the sides at the end of a hard fought ninety minutes.
The Athies following the postponement of their scheduled away fixture at Cowdenbeath last weekend managed to put together a side for the visit to Stirling in midweek and came away with on the night a hard earned point courtesy of Craig Slater’s first half free-kick.
Apart from a handful of players, Gary Irvine also missed the trip to Forthbank through illness and he may again be absent from the technical area at the weekend.
The Station Park management team will be hopeful that Ross Meechan, PJ Crossan and Steven Warnock all unavailable on Tuesday may be fit and raring to go come 3p.m. on Saturday.
Archie Thomas is a major doubt while of course Steven Anderson and Jamie Ness remain sidelined.
There is little doubt that the visitors have a powerful squad at this level, results to date are the ‘proof of the pudding’ but they have lost away to both Annan and Elgin since Chriustmas.
Home fans will in the first instance hope that Andy Munro such a tower of strength for the ‘Loons’ this campaign, Darren Whyte and their colleagues will put the brakes on Nathan Austin and Joe Cardle scorers of 19 and 14 goals respectively to date.
The Station Park clash between the sides in August was a tremendous advert for fourth tier football in Scotland and let’s hope Saturday’s action is of similar vintage.
The referee on Saturday is the experienced Alan Newlands who has already had charge of two Forfar fixtures this season, the Trust Trophy tie against Formartine United and our Friday night visit to Edinburgh City.
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
Match Sponsor – We are delighted to welcome Alistair Hodnett and his party from Hodnett’s (Scotland) Ltd whose base is at Balmydown Farm on the outskirts of Dundee.
Hospitality Guests – Graeme Campbell & Friends, Grant Menmuir & Friends, David Robertson & Guests
