PREVIEW
The ‘Loons’ welcome Stranraer as their cinch league2 ‘first foots’ on Saturday, the second time this season that the Stair Park outfit have been welcome visitors to the ‘toonie.’
Just over two weeks back the sides fought out a 2-2 draw in a Premier Sports Cup group H tie, before the home side went on to clinch what appeared to be a bonus point on the night in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Forfar took a first half lead through a Sam Ellis own goal, James Hilton equalising three minutes into the second period.
Josh Jack then netted his first counter for the Athies in the 76th minute, prior to a Scott McLean penalty equaliser for the visitors with four minutes of the ninety remaining.
Stefan McCluskey then missed a spot-kick for the home side before a 5-3 penalty shoot-out success was recorded.
However as it turned out, Forfar were duly awarded all three points 48 hours later by an SPFL tribunal when it was revealed that their opponents had fielded a player who should have been serving a one match suspension.
The Athies go into Saturday’s game still looking for their first competitive victory of the season in what will be their sixth cup and league outing.
Last Saturday at Bonnyrigg, they could have little complaint about the end result of their opening league encounter and certainly Gary Irvine will be looking for a more positive response from the first whistle this coming weekend.
Confirmation is still awaited but it was hoped that Darren Whyte, Craig Thomson and Nathan Flanagan all absentees through injury and illness last Saturday would be in the squad for the visit of Jamie Hamill’s side.
James Keatings is still ruled out with an eardrum problem that he has unfortunately picked up.
Stranraer recorded a 1-0 home win over Annan Athletic last Saturday, courtesy of a Paul Woods first half penalty.
The management team at Stair Park have brought in seven new faces over the summer, five of whom were in last weekend’s starting eleven, the other two on the bench.
Last season the ‘Loons’ recorded three wins and a draw in their four league clashes against the Wigtownshire outfit and they will be hoping that they can keep up that form and give the supporters a timely boost this Saturday.
Scott Lambie who took charge of our Premier Sports tie away to Queens Park last month is the match referee.
Hospitality Guests – Auto Services Perth, Daniel Buchan & Friends, Connor Deas & Friends
