PREVIEW
Four weeks on from their last home game, the ‘Loons’ return to Station Park on Saturday when they welcome Annan Athletic in what is a match between the sides currently sitting in eighth and tenth position in the cinch league2 table.
The fact that the Athies and their opponents finished second and third in the league in May of this year makes that statistic all the more remarkable and unexpected, but it is a fact nevertheless.
The home side go into the fixture still hurting from their 1-0 defeat down at Stranraer last weekend, this after they dominated the second half of the contest.
Certainly there were problems en route, but Gary Irvine quite rightly did not use this as an excuse, the home side’s 20th minute counter in to say the least dreich conditions sealing the victory.
On the day, the Forfar’s prospects were not helped by a continuance of the injury and illness problems that have beset the club over the past two months.
Craig Slater and Darren Whyte had not recovered from injuries received in the cup-tie win at Kilwinning the previous week, while Craig Thomson was still sidelined, Tomas Brindley and Spencer Moreland sidelined by a sickness bug.
Darren will certainly still be an absentee from the match day squad for Annan’s visit, both Craig’s rated doubtful, but Tomas and Spencer are both likely to be fit.
Calum Moore has also been on the treatment table throughout the week with an ankle problem picked up against Stranraer.
Ben Armour though will be available to Gary following the completion of his two match ban following the red card he received in the win at Elgin three weeks back.
A big plus last weekend was the form shown by Nathan Flanagan on his return to ‘active service’ as a second half sub at Stair Park and he will definitely be in the squad for the visit of one of his former clubs.
Another to impress in the Wigtownshire rain was young defender Bobby Dailly on his first starting appearance for the club.
Annan have had a strange season to date. After winning their group in the Premier Sports Cup which included St. Johnstone and Ayr United, they took Aberdeen to extra-time in the last sixteen tie before bowing out.
However their league form has like our own been a disappointment. Ten points gained from twelve outings is the sum total of their efforts and they also plummeted out of the Scottish Cup a week past Monday in a televised thriller at Pollok, the West of Scotland League outfit going through to a third round clash at Somerset Park courtesy of a 4-3 success.
Three of the points Peter Murphy’s side have procured came in the fixture against Forfar at Galabank in September, two second half goals from danger man Tommy Goss securing a 2-1 win, this after the visitors had gone in for the half-time ‘cuppa’ one up through a Matty Aitken headed counter.
The ‘Loons’ will be all out for revenge on Saturday, especially with three of their next four league games at Station Park and with the backing of the Forfar faithful behind them there is no reason why that second home victory of the season cannot be achieved.
The referee for Saturday’s encounter is Ross Hardie who will be taking charge of a Forfar fixture for the first time.
