‘Loons’ Legends to return for 40th Anniversary of League Title Triumph
[Wednesday, 20 March 2024 10:38]
On Saturday 7th April, 1984, Forfar Athletic defeated Stranraer 5-3 in a pulsating, never to be forgotten by the 2,142 in attendance, 90 minutes of football at Station Park.
In the process the ‘Loons’ of the time clinched the Scottish Football League Division Two title with still astonishingly six games of the season remaining.
It was a title win that was the first in the club’s history, just short of 100 years in the making.
Just one day short of the 40th anniversary of that momentous occasion in the club’s history on Saturday the 6th of April, the current Forfar side will play Dumbarton at Station Park in what is our next home game.
‘Loons’ officials are absolutely delighted that the management team of forty years ago Doug Houston and Henry Hall will make a welcome return to Station Park that afternoon along with at least ten members if not more of the squad who made the town and many a ‘Farfar’ exile proud that blustery spring afternoon.
The players in fact of that era, many of whom played for the club for more years than they probably care to remember are still a tight knit group and meet up on a reasonably regular basis.
They were an integral part of a larger group of ex Forfar Athletic players who had a get together in Broughty Ferry a couple of years back, followed by a golf day in the Fair City last summer. Quite a few were also in attendance at David McGregor’s Dinner in the Reid Hall only a few months back.
Looking forward to the clash with the ‘Sons’ the current Station Park fan base will have their chance to pay tribute on the day to the heroes of ’84.
Many of the current support will still have happy memories of that period in the Athies history, without question the most successful in the club’s long history and the statistics alone prove that.
Further detail of what is planned and exactly who will be in attendance on the 6th will be confirmed along with more background stories/information of that wonderful era over the next couple of weeks within these columns.
Hopefully a date in the diary for many.
