PREVIEW
The ‘Loons’ head into two successive home fixtures against the top two teams in the William Hill League2 in confident mode following a gutsy, determined performance that deservedly yielded three points at Stranraer last Saturday, courtesy it has to be said of a cracking strike from the edge of the box by Alex Ferguson. That result saw the Athies move off the bottom placing in the table and that is a position manager Jim Weir has made his players well aware of this week that must be maintained.
Jim and his squad are looking forward to the challenge that a visit from Peterhead, the new league leaders will bring on Saturday. However the manager is convinced that with the players at his disposal a scenario by the way that is improving week on week, there is no reason why we cannot compete on a level playing field and pick up a much needed home success against a side that we have shared the spoils with on a couple of occasions already this season. In fact looking back to our last clash with the ‘Blue Toon’ outfit, an exciting 2-2 draw at Balmoor in February, it was the visitors who looked more likely to clinch all three points in the closing stages.
On the availability front Danny Denholm and Blair Malcolm return to augment the squad who secured the win at Stair Park, though Declan Byrne and Adam Hutchinson still remain on the sidelines. There is no doubt that the current squad has a depth and a cohesive spirit that was perhaps lacking at times earlier in the campaign and hopefully that will lead to a change in fortunes on home soil in particular.
Peterhead moved three points clear of East Fife whom they meet on the second last Saturday of the season with a 2-1 away win at Stirling last Saturday, a spectacular late solo effort from Danny Strachan sealing the points for the side jointly managed by former ‘Loon’ Jordon Brown and Ryan Strachan. The Forfar management team rate Peterhead as one if not the best footballing side in the division, but are nevertheless confident that their own side can cause any opponent problems and secure results which will in these vital closing weeks of the season ease the worries of all with the ‘Loons’ at heart.
Jordan Curran who had charge of our league fixture at Spartans last month is again the man in the middle.
It has been a difficult week for the club with the sudden death of Club Chaplain Jim McCluskey on Monday. The sympathies and thoughts of the Station Park ‘family’ are extended to Jim’s relatives and many friends.
On the same day a large group of former club officials, members of past management teams and ex players from the era and their wives attended the funeral of Elaine Kennedy wife of 1980’s Station Park icon Stewart Kennedy. Elaine sadly passed away to say the least suddenly some weeks back while en route from a family holiday in Lanzarote.
Hopefully a week which began in such sad circumstances ends on a happy note with smiles the order of the day for Forfar Athletic fans from near and far.
C’mon the ‘Loons’
