Club Statement
[Tuesday, 31 August 2021 17:08]
After 37 years in the voluntary role of Club Secretary, David McGregor has decided to retire from the post.
He had in fact informed his fellow Directors at Station Park of this decision earlier in the year and with the new season successfully underway it is the ideal time for the handover.
Alan Shepherd another lifelong ‘Loons’ fan and a member of the Athies board for some years now will assume the Secretary’s role with immediate effect.
David however will remain a Director of the club and will continue to assist and give advice when required by his successor and in the first instance will resume handling hospitality bookings once covid restrictions at the park permit.
He is also desperately hoping that he will at the third attempt be able to stage the clubs’ 25th Sportsman’s Dinner in the Reid Hall in May of 2022, but that is in the ‘lap of the gods’ at present.
David who first got involved in the club in his teenage years admits that he never imagined when he took over the Secretary’s role in 1984 from Jimmy Robertson who had held the post himself for the previous 25 years that his tenure would last well into the next ‘century.’
For 10 those 37 years, he was also the Chairman of the club.
He leaves the role with many happy and perhaps some not so happy memories, dozens of friendships made locally and beyond and cemented over the years.
However, he does admit that the past 18 months dealing with the covid pandemic and the chaos it has brought to the game in general as well as to life have proved the hardest.
He is looking forward to a new chapter for himself behind the scenes assisting in the future progression of the club initially in the months ahead.
Obviously, he would like to put on record his thanks to the many people far too numerous to mention who have given him such valued assistance and support in a multitude of roles at Forfar Athletic both on and off the field of play since the summer of ’84.
