Preview – Annan Athletic make the trek north tomorrow for their first visit to Station Park since May of 2017 when they lost a Play-off semi final fixture 4-2.
The Galabank side managed by Irishman Peter Murphy, a Carlisle United appearance record holder in his playing day go into the weekend fixtures sitting one point ahead of the ‘Loons’ in third place in the table.
Saturday of course sees the start of the second quarter of the league campaign and back on opening day in late July, Gary irvine’s charges completed a comfortable 2-0 away win, courtesy of first half goals from Stefan McCluskey and Scott Shepherd.
Annan then went on a four match winning run in August, but have since recorded one victory in their remaining four league fixtures, a 2-1 defeat from leaders Kelty the outcome of their last cinch league2 outing.
The ‘Loons’ have also been out of competitive action for a fortnight, following their 1-1 draw at Ochilview, when yet again they paid the penalty for a late but nevertheless deserved counter from the home side.
In the interim a competitive closed doors friendly took place last midweek with Glasgow based Evro Academy, Matty Aitken netting a second half hat trick, hopefully a good omen for the Athies top goal scorer to date in an eventual 4-2 win.
In a match in which all the fit players in the Station Park squad, Marc McCallum apart got a run out, Andy Munro was the home side’s other scorer.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s encounter, Jamie Ness and Steven Doris are unlikely to feature through injury, while Stefan McCluskey took part in training on Thursday as did Sam Fisher the Dundee loanee who has been sidelined since August.
As for the opponents on the day, the manager has made eleven additions to his squad since the end of the previous campaign, the most recent midfielder Michael Garrity on loan from Morton, while the Carlisle connection and the club’s proximity to Cumbria itself is highlighted by the arrival of four players with previous connections to the Brunton Park club.
The home side go into tomorow’s game unbeaten at home in all competitions to date and will be keen to keep up that record and also to build on their impressive home win last time out in late September against Albion Rovers, prior to heading off on their travels once again on cup and league duty over the next two weeks.
Iain Snedden who took charge of Forfar’s away game at Cowdenbeath last month will be in the middle on Saturday for his Station Park debut.
This weekend’s other cinchleague2 fixtures are;-
Friday evening – Edinburgh City v Kelty Hearts
Saturday – Albion Rovers v Elgin City, Cowdenbeath v Stenhousemuir, Stirling Albion v Stranraer
