Of The Loons
It was certainly a Saturday to remember for everyone connected with the Loons. But few enjoyed their day more than Matty Aitken who started the Forfar goal rush with a well-taken strike in the 12th minute shortly after becoming the latest member of the squad to be presented with a shirt to mark one hundred appearances for the Loons.
Matty is, of course, a Loon through and through, first signing for the Club in 2015 as an amateur aged eighteen before securing a professional contract a year later. He went on to make sixty-five appearances before leaving Station Park to join Elgin City on loan and then Albion Rovers on a permanent deal scoring twelve goals for the Wee Rovers in the 2020/21 season.
He returned to the Loons at the start of this season and since then has been an almost ever-present in Gary Irvine’s starting eleven reaching the one hundred mark in the away win at Stranraer in early April.
Matty is of course vying with Stefan McCluskey for the top goalscorer award and is just one behind Saturday’s hat-trick hero with eleven goals from thirty-seven appearances. Over the course of this season, Matty has scored some memorable goals including the winning strike against Kelty Hearts in February and then as mentioned above on Saturday past when he broke the deadlock leading the way for the impressive victory.
Interestingly Matty was the first on the scoresheet when the Loons last won 5-1, back in February 2018 against Stranraer. On that occasion, Matty picked up two goals in the 2nd and 6th minute!
Congratulations to Matty from everyone at Station Park and here’s hoping for a few more goals in the coming weeks!
There are now five members of the current squad over the one hundred appearances mark with Matty joining Ross Meechan, Darren Whyte, Andy Munro, and Marc McCallum.
