Player of the Year Awards
[Monday, 02 May 2022 10:19]
The Forfar Athletic Supporters' Club presented the 2021/22 season awards after yesterday's match at Station Park.
The Supporters' Club also boosted the Club coffers with a superb contribution of £9,000 from fundraising efforts over the course of the season.
The Directors would like to put on record their thanks to the Supporters' Club for all their hard work over what has been a challenging season with the pandemic affecting fundraising events.
In terms of the awards, this season's main winner was defender Andy Munro who picked up both the Supporters' Player of the Year and the Away Supporters' Player of the Year from Rhona Shepherd, Chair of the Supporters' Club. Andy was also voted the winner of the Forfar Athletic TV Goal of the season for his amazing strike away against Annan Athletic in the two all draw in January.
Craig Slater won the Players' Player of the Year award.
Although yesterday saw the end of the regular season, with the play-offs still to come and the goalscoring charts very tight, the top goalscorer award has been delayed until all competitive games have been completed.
Back to the man of the moment and it's been a tremendous season for Andy. Andy has now made 105 appearances for the Loons in two stints at the Club. With nine goals to his name this season, the recent knee injury came as a blow to his chances of topping the Loons' goalscoring table. However, in his typical determined manner, Andy is working hard to get back to full fitness and is challenging for a spot in the team if his teammates can secure a play-off final spot. No one would bet against him adding to his goal tally if that should happen!
Along with Club Captain Ross Meechan, Andy was recently named in the PFA Scotland cinch League 2 Team of the Year. Both players very much merited their spots for their consistently high-level performances and leadership on the field of play.
Craig Slater, the worthy recipient of the Players' Award, has played in all but one of Loons 43 matches so far this season, matching goalkeeper Marc McCallum in that respect. Regarded as one of the best players in the league the midfielder's omission from the Team of the Year was puzzling (as was Marc's omission many Forfar supporters would argue) but there is no doubting Craig's tremendous skill and vital contribution to the team's success over the last year.
Very well done to the award winners and to Gary, the entire squad, the coaching and the backroom team.
Finally a thank you to everyone who stayed behind in the wet conditions to acknowledge the achievements of the players, backroom staff and the management team and for all the best wishes received from far and wide for the play-off matches. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible back at Station Park next Saturday.
