PREVIEW
The ‘Loons’ welcome Elgin City to Station Park on Saturday first following on from their 2-0 win over Stranraer at the same venue last weekend.
Second half counters from skipper Craig Slater and Andy Munro sealed the points for Forfar against the Stair Park outfit and certainly their second half showing in particular fully merited the three points at the end of the ninety minutes.
Indeed although Marc McCallum brought off an excellent late penalty save on the homesters behalf, visiting custodian Luke Scullion brought off a handful of exceptional ‘stops’ over the piece to deny the eager Athies.
The home faithful will be hoping for more of the same against City and it would appear that manager Gary Irvine will have a near full strength squad to choose from.
As was hoped Darren Whyte, Craig Thomson and Nathan Flanagan all returned to the match day squad against Stranraer and all played a part in the proceedings either from the start or off the bench.
It is also likely that Stefan McCluskey who had to head to the dressing room with an elbow injury in the 78th minute will be fighting fit and raring to go for the visit of the Morayshire outfit.
The game though will probably come to quick for James Keatings who is continuing his fight for full fitness.
All in all despite the impressive performances put in by a few of the second half substitutes last week, the Station Park management team are likely to make few if any changes to the starting eleven seven days on.
The sides both recorded a home win in the four clashes between the sides last season with the other two fixtures drawn.
Gavin Price who made twenty appearances for the ‘Loons’ in the early nineties has now been at the helm at Boroughbriggs since the autumn of 2017 and he is assisted these days by the man he took over the reins from and a familiar face at Station Park our former Manager Jim Weir.
City’s record in the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup was similar to our own, three defeats and a draw, while in their league fixtures to date they suffered a 3-1 home reverse against East Fife before sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Stirling last week, Russell Dingwall and Kane Hester their first half marksmen in the Forthbank tussle.
They followed that up with a 1-0 win over a Dundee United ‘B’ side in a Trust Trophy tie on Tuesday past.
Gavin has brought in seven new faces in the summer months, two of them loanees Tom Findlay and Greig Young making their debuts last Saturday.
One player missing this Saturday will be the experienced Darryl McHardy sent off for two bookable offences at Stirling and consequently due to serve a one match suspension.
Another hard fought encounter is a certainty in what are likely to be testing conditions temperature wise for both sides, with the home side no doubt keen to record a second successive home win before heading over to Methil on match day four.
The referee on Saturday is Daniel Graves who by coincidence made his SPFL debut as a man in the middle when the sides met at Forfar in early March.
Hospitality Guests – Darren Douglas & Friends, John Hunter & Friends, Queenswell Road Car Wash
