Bonnyrigg Rose 1 Forfar Athletic 1
[Tuesday, 28 February 2023 22:42]
So close but yet so far for the loons who frustratingly left New Dundas Park with only 1 point when it could have been 3 last night.
The first half was a fairly uneventful affair with both teams creating chances, but neither could take them.
Forfar had the first chance of the game just 3 minutes in when Ben Armours half volley unfortunately cleared the bar not troubling the Rose’s keeper. Armour had another chance on the 15-minute mark when Seb Ross played him through but his powerful shot was wide of goal.
The loons were applying a fair bit of pressure on the home team and the away support thought they’d opened the scoring on 27 minutes but Andy Munro’s header at the back post was agonisingly wide of the target. Minutes later Nathan Flannigan who looked lively managed to break away from his opposite number, driving forward before squaring it to Seb Ross whose shot was straight into the arms of Martin in the goal.
Bonnyrigg had a couple of chances before the half time whistle but couldn’t convert either.
Halftime 0 – 0
Second half started and Bonnyrigg had an early chance with a freekick midway into the loons half, a flighted ball into the back post was header wide by Connolly but this was a wee warning to the visitors.
Ben Armour was then to create his own chance as he jinked past the Rose’s defence but his shot was well saved by Martin.
The game was opening up as both teams pushed for the win. Andy Munro received a yellow card following a tackle on Murray who would have been through on goal on 58 minutes but the freekick came to nothing.
Ten minutes later Mark Docherty found himself in space with the ball and ran into the box nutmegging a defender then as trying to step the next he was brought down and Referee pointed to the spot. Penalty Forfar.
Ben Armour steps up and sends the Bonnyrigg Keeper the wrong way. 0 – 1 to the loons.
In to the final 20 minutes and both teams were making substitutions to bring on fresh legs.
Rose thought they were due a penalty when Ross Gray fell in the box but the Referee didn’t agree and only two minutes later Mitchell also went down in the box but was booked for diving. Things were becoming frantic.
With only 3 minutes of the 90 to play, Bonnyrigg Rose delivered the sucker punch to grab a point out of the loons clutches who were holding out for the win. A freekick into the danger area wasn’t dealt with and McGachie knocked it in at back post and the visitors had to settle for a draw.
Full time 1 - 1
Loons Manager Ray McKinnon commented “ it’s a tough place to come and we are unfortunate not to come away with the 3 points. We competed very well and created good opportunities in the game, I am pleased with our attitude and desire to win but losing that late goal was difficult to take. However we keep our unbeaten run going which the players deserve.”
Next up as another away trip on Saturday, this time to East Fife where the loons will look to get back to winning ways following three draws on the bounce.
