‘Loons’ appeal to Supporters
[Wednesday, 19 April 2023 20:47]
Back on Guy Fawkes Day, the ‘Loons’ had just been outplayed and defeated 4-1 at home by Annan Athletic and consequently sat in bottom place in the cinch league2 table with thirteen points from eleven games played.
The possibility of ending up in an end of season play-off to retain our SPFL status was beginning to loom large, bringing with it sleepless nights to many.
Following that fixture despite having given the management team at that juncture their public backing only three weeks before, the Forfar Athletic Directors made a decision that change was required.
The experienced Ray McKJinnon was brought to the club and since then 32 points have been attained from 22 league fixtures and with it in some style at times fears of relegation to tier five of the Scottish football pyramid have evaporated.
There have been blips along the way, one of those on Saturday past when we lost 2-0 in disappointing fashion at Elgin.
However despite that setback and once again a potentially fairly lengthy injury list the ‘Loons’ players will take the field on Saturday against Bonnyrigg Rose at Station Park knowing that victories in their last three games of the campaign, two of them on home ‘soil’ will see them clinch a place in the League1 end of season promotion play-offs.
In the past few weeks two of the other Angus clubs have appealed for their supporters to back them in vital fixtures and have been rewarded by much improved attendances, increasing by quite a few decibels the level of backing for their respective sides and in most instances having the desired effect on the field of play.
At the same time it has brought a smile to the face of their club treasurers in these difficult financial times for all clubs, Forfar Athletic no exception in that regard. More of that to come at a later date.
Our opponents last Saturday Elgin City adopted a similar policy in the lead up to our clash at Boroughbriggs and saw their attendance rise by nearly 200 patrons on the day.
Returning to matters nearer home, first and foremost the support of the regular fans who turn up at Station Park in all weathers without whom the club could not exist is so valued and appreciated.
it would however be a great tonic, lift, call it what you like to the management, players, club officials and those ‘die hard’ aforementioned supporters of Forfar Athletic if the local sporting public could make the effort to turn out in increased numbers as well for this Saturday’s so vital ninety minutes.
Our visitors on the day who are scrapping for their SPFL existence in their debut season are sure to bring a sizeable and noisy support with them, so a plea to all those of a Forfar Athletic persuasion.
Make your way to Station Park on Saturday at 3p.m. even earlier if you fancy a pre-match refreshment in the 1984 Lounge and lend your support to the ‘Loons’ cause.
It will be appreciated we can assure you.
