SPFL League Two – 2024/25 Season
[Wednesday, 22 May 2024 09:18]
With the League One and Two play-offs complete for another season, we now know the make-up of the SPFL League Two for the forthcoming campaign.
There will be eight ‘old’ faces from the 23/4 season alongside the two clubs eventually relegated from the higher division, namely Stirling Albion and Edinburgh City.
Stenhousemuir and Dumbarton, the latter after a play-off final win over Spartans head in the opposite direction.
Our old friends Stranraer survived the nerve shredding League2 or pyramid play-off final on Saturday past, call it what you wish with a 5-3 aggregate victory over the ambitious East Kilbride to retain their SPFL status.
In so doing they became only the third SPFL club to finish in the 42nd spot and survive the ordeal, Montrose and Cowdenbeath the others.
Of course the Central Park outfit then ended up on the losing side against Bonnyrigg in their second play-off final visitation and headed for the Lowland League four years after their initial triumph over Cove Rangers.
The Stair Park outfit at the weekend also bucked a recent trend which had seen Kelty Hearts, Bonnyrigg Rose and Spartans from the Lowland League gain SPFL status in successive seasons with play-off successes over Brechin City, Cowndenbeath and Albion Rovers respectively.
Back to the formation of the fourth tier for next season and for the first time in living memory for most we will have three opponents based in the Edinburgh area with visits scheduled to the revamped but seemingly still austere Meadowbank Stadium, Ainslie Park and New Dundas Park to face Edinburgh City, Spartans and Bonnyrigg Rose respectively.
There will still be two fairly lengthy excursions down the A77 to Stranraer and up the A96 to Elgin, along with the slightly shorter hop up the A952 to Peterhead.
East Fife will again be the local derby fixture while Stirling Albion and the Forthbank Stadium will be the central belt port of call, replacing their Ochilview neighbours.
Finally we have Clyde who made such a fine recovery under Ian McCall in the second half of the season just completed. Presumably the ‘Bully Wee’ will again be utilising New Douglas Park as their home venue, confirmation as they say awaited
The fixtures for the new season are again due to be released fairly late in the day on Thursday June 27th.
Confirmation then of the League Two line-up for the season ahead, a sponsor still to be announced, the opening fixtures due to be played on August 3rd;-
