Match Preview
For the second year in succession we welcome Highland League side Formartine United to Forfar for a pre-season fixture.
Twelve months back the home side ran out 2-1 winners, results in these type of matches though not irrelevant, certainly not the main purpose of getting game time minutes into the legs of the respective players.
Stuart Anderson’s side went on to finish fifth in the Highland League table come late April, nine points adrift of leaders Buckie Thistle and having made a few close season acquisitions to bolster their squad, they will provide a stiff test for the ‘Loons’ squad in their final preparation match in advance of next Saturday’s visit of Livingston in the Premier Sports Cup.
One of United’s recent signings will be a familiar face to the home support, Tyler Mykta having spent the second half of last season on loan at Forfar from Cove Rangers.
As far as the Athies pre-season preparations have gone, manager Ray McKinnon is delighted to have got two full ninety minutes under his squad’s ‘belt,’ a 2-1 win having been recorded in a closed door fixture against the University of Stirling in the central belt on Tuesday evening, following on from their 3-0 victory at Brechin last Saturday.
The manager is also delighted to have added a fourth new face to the ranks with 18 Year striker Nathan Cannon putting pen to paper in midweek. Ray commented on Nathan’s attributes, his size and presence in forward areas, his pace and his eye for goal, emphasised by his excellent counter under the ‘trialist’ banner at the Glebe last weekend.
All four newcomers to the Station Park ranks will be in the squad for Saturday’s game, with a few trialists again included in the ranks on the day.
The manager is well aware that he will have to add an additional player or two to his numbers ahead of the cup tie on the 13th and along with his coaching staff is working feverishly in that regard.
A reminder to supporters of both sides that Saturday’s fixture has a 2p.m. kick-off.
